The Soul of Toussaint: The Music & Legacy Behind Our Name

Discover how New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint inspired the flavors, atmosphere and creative spirit of Toussaint Brasserie in downtown Dallas.

The Man Behind the Music

Few musicians have shaped the sound of New Orleans quite like Allen Toussaint. A celebrated pianist, songwriter, producer and arranger, Toussaint helped define the city's signature blend of rhythm and blues, jazz, soul and funk.

Born in New Orleans in 1938, Toussaint built a career that crossed genres and generations. His influence extended far beyond Louisiana, working with legendary artists including Paul McCartney, Patti LaBelle, Dr. John and The Rolling Stones. From "Southern Nights" to "Working in the Coal Mine," his compositions became part of the American musical landscape.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2012, Toussaint left a legacy rooted in creativity, collaboration and an unmistakable sense of rhythm.

Where Music Meets the Menu

At Toussaint Brasserie, we take inspiration from the same spirit of cultural exchange that shaped Allen Toussaint's music.

Jazz and the sounds of New Orleans evolved through generations of musical influences, bringing together different traditions to create something distinctly American. Our culinary philosophy follows a similar approach, drawing from flavors, techniques and traditions across cultures to create a dining experience that feels both familiar and unexpected.

From thoughtfully prepared dishes to craft cocktails, our menu reflects the creativity and individuality that made Toussaint's music so memorable.

A Story Told Through Every Detail

Located inside the Renaissance Dallas St. Elm Hotel on historic Elm Street, Toussaint Brasserie brings that musical heritage into the heart of downtown Dallas.

Throughout the restaurant, tattoo-inspired illustrations tell a layered story of music, history and place. The artwork pays tribute to Allen Toussaint's legacy, the building's Art Deco character and the cultural history of Dallas.

The experience extends beyond the restaurant. Every guest room at the Renaissance Dallas St. Elm Hotel features a record player, inviting visitors to enjoy music as part of their stay. Through the hotel's Records & Reserves program, guests can borrow vinyl albums from the front desk and discover music at their own pace.

Keeping the Spirit Alive in Downtown Dallas

Allen Toussaint's legacy was never confined to a single genre. His music brought people, sounds and ideas together, creating something that continues to resonate across generations.
